Former SYMPHONY X bassist Thomas Miller rises from the shadows with “Lazarus Effect”, a long-awaited return built on majestic progressive metal, muscular bass lines and the kind of sweeping melodic drama that instantly recalls his classic years. This is not a nostalgia trip — it feels more like an unfinished chapter finally kicking the door back open.
Miller’s history with Michael Romeo stretches all the way back to 1986, eventually leading to the formation of SYMPHONY X in 1994. After appearing on the band’s formative records and helping shape their early progressive-metal identity, he stepped away from the scene — but never stopped writing.
“Lazarus Effect” is the result of those years spent quietly building ideas. Vocalist Howard “Hollywood How” Portney gives the material a powerful, classic-metal delivery, while Romeo returns on guitars and digital programming, immediately adding that unmistakable blend of precision, weight and neo-classical fire.
Michael Pinnella also appears with keyboard solos on “Closer To The Sun” and the sprawling “Sailing To Utopia”, reconnecting three musicians whose chemistry helped define an important era of progressive metal. Eric Rachel, producer of the first six SYMPHONY X albums, handles the mix and mastering, tying the whole project even more tightly to Miller’s musical roots.
“Dark Horse” and “Fear No Evil” set the tone with muscular progressive riffing and a strong sense of forward motion, while “All The King’s Horses” expands the melodic side without losing the weight underneath. “Closer To The Sun” brings in Pinnella’s keyboard work and pushes the album into more cinematic territory.
“Aria Etude” works as a brief instrumental breath before “When Darkness Falls” drops back into heavier terrain. “Culmination” feels exactly like its title suggests — a tightening of the album’s themes before the final centerpiece takes over.
That centerpiece is “Sailing To Utopia”, a five-part progressive-metal journey moving through “In The Palace Of Knossos”, “Thunder’s Majesty”, “Judging The Darkness”, “‘Neath The Heel Of Mayhem” and “Return”. It is the album’s grand statement: ambitious, dramatic and built for listeners who still want progressive metal to actually progress somewhere.
There is a certain poetic symmetry to all of this. Miller did not return with a stripped-down solo record or a safe collection of old tricks; he came back with something large, intricate and unapologetically progressive. “Lazarus Effect” sounds like a musician reconnecting with his past without becoming trapped inside it.
