Calgary metallers THE ASTRAL PROPHETS launch their first full-length with “Invasion”, an eight-track blast of groove, power and cosmic heavy metal. Big riffs, punchy bass, soaring hooks and sci-fi atmosphere turn the album into something that feels halfway between a battle cruiser and a biker bar in deep space.
The band call their style “Power Groove”, and that tag actually makes sense. There is the muscular stomp of groove metal, the uplift and melodic sweep of power metal, plus enough synth work and futuristic texture to keep the whole thing from sounding earthbound.
“Target Locked” opens with a blunt, heavy riff and immediately establishes the album’s strongest weapon: the rhythm section hits hard, but the songs still leave plenty of room for melody. “Power of the Rift” pushes that contrast even further, pairing thick low-end weight with soaring vocals and a chorus built like a rallying cry.
The title track is one of the record’s big moments. “Invasion” brings Jeff Black of GLYPH into the fold for a guitar duel with AJ Bergin, adding extra fire to a song already loaded with sharp riffing and cosmic drama. The result feels less like a guest spot and more like two pilots fighting over the same control panel.
“Into Nothing” is more playful and swaggering, with a noticeable glam-rock swing underneath the heavier framework. It is one of those tracks that loosens its shoulders without losing impact, and that contrast makes it one of the album’s most immediate songs.
“A Trail of Broken Stars” slows the assault and lets more emotion into the room, while “World Eater” drags the music back toward a heavier, more deliberate groove. “Hyperdrive” then lives up to its name, pushing the energy back up with melodic leads and another strong rhythmic charge.
The album closes with “Inside the Hyperdrive”, an instrumental that feels like the comedown after the battle. Psychedelic keyboards, slower movement and a more reflective atmosphere give the record a surprisingly thoughtful ending.
Lyrically, “Invasion” lives inside a dystopian sci-fi universe of alien forces, advanced technology, retribution, madness, longing and survival. The concept is big, but the band never lets it bury the songs. Underneath the spaceships and wormholes are riffs, hooks and enough groove to keep the whole thing grounded.
