Skunk Anansie – Smashes and Trashes (The Greatest Hits) [Bonus Track Version] (2009)

“Smashes and Trashes” is a sharp snapshot of SKUNK ANANSIE at their most combustible: muscular alternative rock, big emotional hooks and Skin’s unmistakable voice slicing straight through the mix. The bonus-track edition adds two acoustic versions, giving the compilation a slightly more intimate tail after all that electric tension.

The core 15-track set pulls together staples from the band’s first three albums and adds three then-new songs — “Tear the Place Up”, “Because of You” and “Squander” — making this more than a simple greatest-hits package. “Charlie Big Potato”, “Hedonism”, “Weak”, “Secretly”, “Selling Jesus” and “Brazen” still hit with that uniquely SKUNK ANANSIE mix of bruised melody and sharp-edged rock, while the newer material proved the reunion had real teeth.

The extra acoustic cuts of “Weak” and “Because of You” strip away some of the muscle and leave the songs’ emotional skeleton exposed. It is a smart way to finish a collection that spends most of its runtime hitting hard and speaking louder than everyone else in the room.
