QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE return with “Perfecth”, a record that turns imperfection into its main weapon. Sleazy grooves, crooked melodies and desert-rock swagger are still here, but everything feels a little more fractured, intimate and dangerous around the edges.
The title itself is a deliberate mutation of “perfect”, and that warped little extra letter says a lot about the album. QOTSA have never been interested in spotless surfaces, and “Perfecth” leans into that instinct: the songs feel stitched together from desire, damage, humor and the sort of emotional debris that looks ugly until the light hits it properly.
Recorded between New Orleans and Los Angeles, the album moves like nine rooms in the same strange house. “It’s Only Love” opens the door with deceptive softness, while “Insignificant Other” settles into one of those loose, narcotic grooves Josh Homme seems able to summon at will. There is space in the arrangement, but plenty of menace underneath it.
“Where The Goth Girls At?” is exactly the kind of title only QOTSA could get away with, while “Mono” and “From The Cliff” push the album into more fractured territory. “Sunday” stretches the mood out, and “Easy Street” brings back the band’s dirty, hip-swinging pulse with a grin that feels slightly dangerous.
“Phantom Limb” is darker and more cinematic, before “Run Away From The Mob” closes the album like the getaway scene after something has gone badly wrong. The whole thing feels less like a carefully polished rock record and more like a cracked mirror that somehow catches more light because of the damage.
There is also a kintsugi-like idea running through the album: broken things do not need to be hidden; sometimes the cracks are what make them worth looking at. That suits QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE perfectly — or perhaps, in this case, perfecth.
