Japanese electronicore force PASSCODE celebrate ten years of their major-label career with “RE:CODE”, rebuilding key songs from their catalogue with the sharper, heavier sound of the band as they exist today. It is less a nostalgic compilation than a full-voltage rewrite of their own history.
The idea behind “RE:CODE” is simple but effective: take songs that have grown with PASSCODE on stage and record them again with the current lineup, current production and a decade of live experience behind them. Familiar melodies return with harder guitars, denser electronics and a more aggressive rhythmic punch, while the vocal interplay feels noticeably more confident and battle-tested.
“MISS UNLIMITED [Re:]”, “Ray [Re:]”, “Taking you out [Re:]” and “ONE STEP BEYOND [Re:]” are not treated like museum pieces. The arrangements have been tightened and re-energized, keeping the hooks intact while giving the songs the extra weight PASSCODE developed through years of playing with a live band.
The newly recorded material also underlines how strange and effective the PASSCODE formula still is: metalcore riffs crash into glitching electronics, pop melodies fight with screamed vocals, and huge choruses suddenly appear from what sounds like a machine trying to tear itself apart. It should be chaos, yet somehow the gears continue to mesh.
Opening cut “GENESIS” gives the anniversary project a proper fresh starting point, while the closing “Ray – from THE FIRST TAKE” offers a different perspective on one of the band’s signature songs. For longtime followers, “RE:CODE” works like a bridge between eras; for newcomers, it is practically a map of what makes PASSCODE such an unusual creature in modern Japanese heavy music.
