CRYSTAL EYES return after seven years with “Thunder God”, and they waste no time polishing the rust off the armour. The Swedes come armed with towering choruses, galloping riffs and the kind of melodic heavy metal that still believes a song should hit hard and stay in your head.
The band’s roots in classic ’80s metal are still obvious, but “Thunder God” does not feel like a dusty reconstruction. There is real weight in the guitars, the production has enough modern punch to keep everything breathing, and Mikael Dahl’s songwriting keeps circling back to the things CRYSTAL EYES have always done best: melody, momentum and hooks with broad shoulders.
“Whirlwind Of Doom” opens like a storm front rolling over the horizon, while “We Came, We Saw, We Conquered” leans harder into the triumphant side of the band. “Kids Of Rock ’n’ Roll” is pure fist-in-the-air metal nostalgia, but the song works because the chorus carries enough conviction to stop it from feeling like costume jewellery.
“The Battle Will Be Won” keeps the heroic energy burning, while “Remembrance” changes the temperature and brings a more personal, emotional shade to the record. “Follow The Storm” then pushes things back into motion with a darker sense of drive.
“Shadows Of The Night” has that classic European heavy-metal feel — melodic, slightly ominous and built around a chorus that opens up rather than simply getting louder. “Metal Bound” is the obvious mission statement, a straight shot of traditional steel with no apologies and very little wasted motion.
“A Silent Farewell” closes the album on a more reflective note, giving the record an ending that feels earned rather than merely dramatic. It is the sort of closer that lets the dust settle instead of firing one last cannon just because it can.
What stands out most is how focused “Thunder God” feels. CRYSTAL EYES set out to make an album where every song had its own identity and nothing felt like filler, and the result plays exactly that way: compact, melodic and built with the discipline of a band that has been doing this long enough to know when a song is finished.
