We already featured Canadian hard rockers TEAZE third studio album remastered by Rock Candy, and now, as requested, here’s their 2nd, 1978’s “On The Loose” in its Canadian CD remastered release from 2016.
Housed in a vinyl record gatefold replica aka Digisleeve, curiously this reissue features the original Japanese edition cover art, different from the Canadian / U.S. pressing. And that’s not that curious, because TEAZE was really popular overseas, in fact, while touring presenting “On The Loose” they recorded a live album (‘Tour Of Japan’) at Tokyo Nakano Sun Plaza, released later the same year 1978.
Though their moniker screamed glam rock and band members Brian Danter (vocals, bass), Mark Bradac (guitar), Chuck Price (guitar), and Mike Kozak (drums) look sort of like The Bay City Rollers, TEAZE was all about rock n’ roll, twin-guitar attack hard rock with melody.
Teaze was originally formed in Windsor, Ontario, in the mid-’70s, and started out as a cover band playing Detroit-styled hard rock at local bars in the vein of Grand Funk and Alice Cooper. The 4-piece eventually moved to Toronto and established a large local following, quickly becoming one of the hottest bar bands in the area.
In 1976, they recorded a number of demo songs in hopes of securing a recording contract, but the demos were so good they ended up being released as their debut self-titled album on a small local label.
The LP attracted the attention of Aquarius Records, and the band were signed to a national recording contract.
Teaze relocated to Montreal where this debut album for the label, ”On The Loose” was recorded 1977 with producer George Lagios (April Wine) at the desk chair, and released in 1978. The album featured ten songs written by the band members (except opener ‘Gonna Have A Good Time Tonight’ penned by AC/DC’s songwriter duo Harry Vanda & George Young).
All hard rockin’ songs with driving guitars except for one; ‘Sweet Misery’ is a western-styled ballad with acoustics in the mix that became a hit for the band. While the song attracted radio attention and made Teaze stars, it was not the kind of publicity the band wanted.
They were a hard rock act and worked very hard on stage to live up to that reputation, but the song “Sweet Misery” gave the public the wrong impression of the sound. Japanese fans did not, and TEAZE sold tons of records in Asia.
“Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight”, the Vanda & George Young song previously recorded by Easybeats but recorded by TEAZE with a lot of hard rock bite, was released as single as well but failed to match the success of their previous hit.
Anyway, ”On The Loose” would establish TEAZE as one of Canada’s top bands, and would lead to a successful world tour and a recording contract in the U.S.A.
This reissue sounds great, if you like late ’70s hard rock with that Canadian special feeling, you should check out ”On The Loose”.
