Tatiana Manolidou is not simply another pretty face fronting another symphonic rock band. This Greek singer is quite talented. Having been raised in a musical family, she’s trained in piano, vocals, and music theory. Ms. Manolidou has composed music for both Greek theater and television. With her Niovi project, she puts her song composition, musicianship, and voice to her first album, Breathe of Light. For this project, Tatiana received some help from Cindy Spear (Iona, Karnataka, Colin Mold) for the lyrics, and production assistance from Bob Katsionis (Firewind). But the music is her own. It’s interesting and entertaining blend of melodic rock, sometimes nearing a metal edge, with symphonic and theatrical elements with some obvious accessible pop music nuances.
Mostly, Breathe of Light reminds me of current and popular Broadway theatrical music akin to Les Miserables, but not forgoing the rock element. I hear this in many songs, some in the heart of the album, including Testament of Soul, My Lonely Prince, Ring of Darkness, and When We Dance. That last song certainly defines the rock element. As to Tatiana’s vocal style and performance, she easily could traverse the distance between rock and opera or theater diva, though she leans more to the latter. However, there are sometimes when I wonder if she has strength to sustain her range or, perhaps, she’s merely being restrained in the studio. It’s like the the latter as the mix feels a little soft over all. Regardless, Tatiana’s is a pleasure to listen to, as is the music.
