Founded in the very early 80s, five-piece SYRON VANES were one of the first bands coming from Sweden inspired by the new wave of British Heavy Metal). After a tour in Germany in 1983, indie British label Ebony Records owner and producer Darryl Johnston offered the band a record deal, and in 1984 their first album ‘Bringer Of Evil’ was released. The LP sold well and Syron Vanes appeared in almost every rock magazine, hailed in the music press as the new big thing.
As requested, here’s the band second album, 1986’s “Revenge“, in its Steelheart Memories remastered reissue for the first time on CD, including bonus tracks. Guitarist Anders Hahne has managed to restore and enhance the recordings to a quality which is way better than the vinyl originals, but without changing the sound (i.e. NOT bringing the levels up to the max and compressing the sound beyond recognition).
As happened with most bands from the NWOBHM and Scandi Metal scene, their music morphed to a slightly more commercial path circa 1985. Not keyboard driven or anything, just a bit less classic metal and more hard rock with melody.
While songs like ‘Love and Hate’, ‘Dream of Glory’ and ‘Live My Way’ are commercial midpaced tunes with a certain Mama’s Boys / Praying Mantis feel, ‘One Hell Of A Show’ and high-speed rocker ‘Fire We Got’ stil sport that classic metal heaviness.
This reissue features the bonus tracks ‘Lying Again’ and ‘Taking Over’ from a 1987 rehearsal recording. The quality is however more demo than rehearsal, I’d say, but it’s a nice chance to hear never released songs.
“Revenge” is a cool mid-Eighties album with strong songs, with a decent production for an indie – now in perspective after many decades, that ‘indie sound’ is one of the charms of this album.
