As requested, the one and only album from Glasgow rockers SLIDE, 1989’s “Down So Long“, in its not so easy to find CD pressing, never reissued. Signed by Phonogram / Mercury, SLIDE musical style in the late ’80s had a lot of potential, mixing rock&pop, melodic rock, and even a touch of AOR – not fluffy, but more earthy. As guests appear some well known British musicians, especially Scottish.
Musically think fellow countrymen GUN however with less noisy guitars and a much more melodic feeling, clean sound. Add a pinch from the more rocky side of Simple Minds or Inxs, and with Grant Richardson’s sexy bluesy voice these guys had an audience both in America and Europe.
SLIDE got moderate radio airplay for their single ‘Why Is It A Crime?’, toured with The Black Crowes, GUN, Texas, as well as in their own right. However before the recording of their second album, SLIDE disbanded. Drummer Richard Hynd joined Texas, bassist Scott Fraser toured with Deacon Blue, and the rest of the guys continued in the music business in one way or another.
SLIDE’s “Down So Long” was adopted by AOR / Melodic Rock collectors, an album that isn’t strictly belongs to the genre but its dynamics and clean melodies easily fits into late 80’s tastes.
