If the cinematic car crash constitutes the cliché that never dies (or kills or wounds its action hero passengers, for that matter), the new play presented by Unstrung Harpist Productions and directed by Tom Prewitt seeks to portray the darker, uglier side of its actual victims’ real-life experiences.

Shock/Trauma chronicles the effects – personal, social, familial, romantic – of Anna Parker’s (Julie Roundtree) crippling injuries in the wake of a devastating car crash that temporarily leaves her in a medically induced coma. Upon her return to consciousness, she faces not only a daunting road to recovery that proves physically and psychologically taxing, but also the feelings of guilt, bewilderment and helplessness of her friends and loved ones, including her boyfriend, Marc Radford (Evan Crump), who struggle in vain to help Anna – and themselves – restore a semblance of normalcy to their lives.

Silencer – The Great Bear (2012)

The Great Bear is my first experience with Denver, Colorado, metal band Silencer. Although over past 10 years, they’ve had some domestic and international success with their version of American thrash metal. The Great Bear is intended to be a concept album, one considering alternative history.

Revisiting the early space race between the United States and Russia, Silencer wonder what would have happened if Russia “chose to one-up the American’s moon landing by going somewhere further.” They tell the story from the perspective of the Russian nation and an individual member of the mission. Sounds promising, right? But how does it pan out?

First, while the album has 11 songs,The Great Bear is a short album, on 30 minutes long. But if you knock the one spoken piece, 1969, and the last piece, which sounds like the Russian national anthem, then you’re down to nine songs and just better than 27 minutes. If it weren’t for quantity of songs The Great Bear might have been considered an EP. Second, Silencer’s music is more heavy metal and less thrash. It’s more like meat and potatoes Eighties traditional metal, with a side of thrash thrown in. Alternatively, Silencer packs a lot into many of the songs, mostly a big bass line and massive amounts of riffage, with a guitar solo now and then. Of these tracks Great Bear, Star City, The Roar, and Orders/Sacrifice are the best picks.

Mongrel – Reclamation 2012

NOW!NOT REAL WAR…

On the album the band went through “a living hell” – said the leader of the team, Adam Savage. “It took four years, five line-up changes, two studios, two labels, and countless hours of work and here it finally comes out!”

During recording, the tension between the parties came to a head, and in the end it was decided to leave the vocalist and drummer. In place of the latter was quickly found Dave Kazukiewicz, but with a singer … “We have found the singer, but quickly stepped life circumstances and everything will have changed” – says Savage. “Then I asked my friend, Jessica’y Sierra come with us on a few shows.”

Following the presentations, Jessica became a regular participant Mongrel, and the group returned to the studio to re-record all of the material from scratch.
