Gotthard – Firebirth (2012)
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, whose death by fire is the end and also the beginning, the GOTTHARD musicians, in the depths of endless mourning, found peace, strength and courage to set back out for the way to the here and now.
The end of this road back to life and the start of a new GOTTHARD era is evident for the Swiss multiplatinum band with “Firebirth”, the new and moving album. “Firebirth” is arguably one of the most important and in its conception most emotional album in the band’s 20-year history. It is the first studio album since the tragic death of the legendary frontman Steve Lee in a traffic accident in the autumn of 2010 and the first step in a new and much anticipated chapter for the band, together with their new singer Nic Maeder.
Iconic Tonic – Rock And Roll 2012
now…
Columbus, Ohio’s Iconic Tonic is another strong act that has been signed to the Jamsync Music label in recent times. After the listening to “Out Loud”, I assumed the band was going to be a straight-ahead party rock band but that’s not the case. Rock And Roll shows off a band that has many influences.
The intro “MMXI” gives me a Black Sabbath vibe, possibly something you’d hear from the Tony Martin era. “Out Loud”, of course, is a fun hard rocking number and is one of the singles from the album. Definitely the most obvious choice for airplay. “Zombie Baby” not surprisingly has a bit of Rob Zombie to it while the trippy “Lost At Sea” sounds like something Pink Floyd could’ve done and “Bring You Down” sounds like alternative metal in the vein of Cold or Tool or like something from the last Lizzy Borden album. ”Time To Be With You” is done in a Beatles style. The instrumental “Iconic Tonic” takes us back to a simple hard rock style à la 1970s KISS.
Candlemass – Psalms For The Dead (2012)
Candlemass is one of the pioneers of doom metal, releasing one of the seminal albums in the genre back in 1986 with Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. A quarter century later the band has recorded what they say will be their final studio album, Psalms For The Undead. They still plan to play live and be around for their 30th anniversary in a couple of years. If this does end up being their swan song, it is a solid farewell. Reviewer Natalie Zed describes it as “unquestionably the finest of their most recent three releases, the work of seasoned musicians, with experience and craft now in place of raw talent and drive. The album is aware of itself, in the context of classic doom metal, seems to know exactly where it fits.”
The Machine – Calmer Than You Are (2012)
The Machine is a three-piece psychedelic stoner rock band, together since somewhere 2007.
Calmer Than You Are is The Machine‘s fourth album. This time around, the band sports a more aggressive sound, but without compromising their extended psychedelic freak-outs.
Special guests at this album launch will be Monomyth. It’s the brand new instrumental outfit of Sander Evers (ex-35007 / ex-Gomer Pyle) and Selwyn Slop (ex-Incense / ex-Lucid).
