Player began as a chance meeting between Peter Beckett and J.C. Crowley, in 1977. They met by coincidence, both being the only two dressed in jeans and t-shirts, attending an all-white garb party in Hollywood. J.C. came from Galveston Bay, Texas. Oddly enough, they both turned out to be singer/songwriters, and made plans to get together later and jam. In J.C.’s garage, they began working on their new material. Not for the faint hearted or pussy glamsters and sleazsters, Motochrist play bitchin’ rock ‘n’ roll soaked in the dregs of punk rock with Motorhead and Ramones thrown in for good measure, as well as the odd curveball and melodies and twisted lyrics to boot. ‘Live To Kill Another Day’ proving the point perfectly, kicking things off on a barnstorming riff that Lemmy would be proud of before ‘The Fist’ pulls up on a killer guitar lick with sufficiently violent lyrics – This shit is the bomb right here, picking up teeth indeed. If this were played in a night club a riot would ensue, no doubt about it. Never mind the fist, this is like an exocet going off. Motochrist change pace on the title track with a suitably summery keyboard and Beach Boys melody and harmonies to boot, the cheeky scamps!
I’ve actually liked some of the previous Reinxeed albums I’ve heard, but with “Welcome To The Theater” Tommy Reinxeed and his band is really testing me. I’m afraid I’m failing the test, as this album is just TOO MUCH. Apparently these songs were influenced by movies, and by listening to it those movies must have been nothing but BIG spectacles. You can imagine huge armies with swords in the air, dragons flying above and giants stomping around…
