TRILLIUM – ALLOY (2011)

Trillium (trillium, wakerobin, tri flower, birthroot) is a genus of about 40–50 species of spring ephemeral perennials, native to temperate regions of North America and Asia. It used to be treated in the family Trilliaceae or Trillium family, a part of the Liliales or Lily order. The AGP II treats Trilliaceae as a synonym of the family Melanthiaceae. The above ground parts of Trilliums are scapes with three large, leaf-like bracts with the true leaves reduced to underground papery coverings around the rhizomes. That is one definition of Trillium, another is the compound or Alloy rather that is called Trillium-D which is known from Star Trek. That sounds a bit fitting and a rather fun coincident considering the name of the band and album title. Thing is though that the name is rather derived from the first thing, the flower and the title Alloy comes from in being a conjoining of metal and some other compound which makes it a fitting title according to vocalist Amanda Somerville. It is of course Somerville’s first metal solo project we talk about here and to her help she has enlisted the team from Gate Studios which is Sacha Paeth and Miro. Then she also works with Sander Gommans, Olaf Reitmeier and so on, for her help in songwriting she had Mat Sinner and renowned singer Jörn Lande guests as vocalist on a track. As you see, there is quite a bit of talent and known names within the metal community involved in this project, that in itself is of course no guarantee of success but usually things where Sacha is involved tend to be good.

Cage – Supremacy Of Steel (2011)

  • Cage, San Diego’s self-professed American power metal kings, has returned with their sixth album, Supremacy Of Steel. Formed in 1992 during the outbreak of grunge, Cage remained true to their sound. Almost two decades later, Cage has maintained a classic heavy metal vibe.

Similarities to Iced Earth, Judas Priest Painkiller-era and King Diamond all come to mind frequently. Vocalist Sean Peck’s high octave screeches might turn some people off, but Halford and King Diamond make a decent living from their falsettos. Some people might also scream Judas Priest or King Diamond rip-off, but those are just two artists that have had an impact on Cage’s sound.

The double guitar attack of Dave Garcia and Steve Brogden, the bottom end assault of Pete Stone, and the thunderous drum display of Norm Leggio (Psychotic Waltz), provides the powerful backdrop to Peck’s air raid siren wails.

Cage’s songwriting and story-telling is part of the band’s strengths. Whether it’s a historical, war-related or horror-themed song, they vividly capture the mood lyrically. Some material verges into cheesy territory or silly comic book scenarios, but otherwise, Cage produce some ass-kicking metal songs.

“Bloodsteel” opens with some heavy reverb-laden tremolo picking and black metal blast beats which then settles into a fast paced metal riff in the vein of ”Jugulator.” One-man black metal band Bitter Frost performs a guest lead guitar spot.

“Metal Empire” is a slightly cheesy ode to heavy metal — fans of Manowar should dig it. “War of the Undead,” is one of the fastest and thrashiest songs Cage has ever penned. Peck is a real scream machine the whole way through. A soon-to-be classic Cage song is “The Beast of Bray Road.” It has references to “Black River Falls” from their last albumScience Of Annihilation and is about a werewolf.

When it comes to Cage releases, the packaging is top-notch. The brilliant cover artwork of Marc Sasso (Dio, Halford) and the stunning 16-page inside booklet complete with lyrics and artwork by Danial Duarte and Forrest Butler are great visuals to accompany Cage’s aural assault.

Cage has been slugging it out in the metal world for almost 20 years. Some people love ’em, some people hate ’em. But on Supremacy Of Steel, there’s no doubt that Cage is more than capable of delivering the metal goods.

JOSEF MELIN – Prepare For Y2K (2011)

Hailing from Sweden, Josef Melin is the brainchild of the band Smooth Reunion, they released their critical acclaimed full length debut “Cleaning Up the Business” in 2008. Now Josef is going solo, as a first taste we saw the release of the EP“Offshore Monsters” in November last year. Now, on February 2, 2011 it is time for his full length debut “Prepare for Y2K”.

This is an excellent mix of Pop, Jazz, Soul and a big portion ofSteely Dan; well crafted, humoristic and performed with brilliance and charm! His melodies and twists and turns are flowing with ease and together with the smart and sometime humoristic lyrics we get a combination that is irresistible. All fans of Smooth Reunion will feel at home as the sound and feel-good vibe also is found on here, its just that, the songs on “Prepare for Y2K” is even better!

SIXX: A.M. – 7 (2011)

On December 13, Motley Crue’s bassist Nikki Sixx side project SIXX: A.M. is releasing “7”, a new collection of tracks which aim to put a new spin on 7 songs from their 2 successful albums ‘The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack’ and ‘This is Gonna Hurt’.

“7” features the band performing acoustic versions of tracks from each of their two albums, reworked with different arrangements.
The opening track “Lies Of The Beautiful People” consists of acoustic guitar and oriental orchestration that make the song more mysterious than the original. The solo guitar is also a highlight.
“Is Gonna Hurt” has received a beautiful piano arrangement, and their hit single “Life Is Beautiful” is remarkably revisited with strong guitars that sound as powerful as an electric one.
“Help Is On The Way” features a very appealing combination of acoustic guitar, cellos, violins and piano alongside speechless vocals with high quality arrangements.
“Sure Feels Right” is a great fusion of strings and piano with an electro-acoustic guitar work. “Pray For Me” is more stright, with a double acoustic six string guitar panned on both channels.
“Accidents Can Happen” ends the album with a moody, slow melancholic feel.

SIXX: A.M. “7” is much more than ‘let’s play some of our songs with an acoustic’.
All songs have been reworked at some point that sometimes sound as new ones. There’s new beautiful melodies and gorgeous arrangements with a nice variety of high quality textures.
James Michael is a great singer, his vocal range gets even more amazing on these stripped versions, enhanced by the piano, cellos and violins background.
“7” reinforces the fact that SIXX: A.M. isn’t a spare time project for Nikki Sixx and his talented bandmates, it’s a serious and interesting power plant of ideas and musicality.
Very Good.
