Valient Thorr – Our Own Masters (2013)
After five albums, Valient Thorr’s asphalt-burning stew of hardcore punk, NWOBHM, and ’70s boogie-rock should come as a surprise only to those who haven’t already had their asses thoroughly kicked by it. What is shocking is how the Venus-born, Chapel Hill-based quintet continues to improve with each album; Our Own Masters delivers all the hairy, sweaty, twin-guitar insanity of their live shows, yet also contains some of their most unabashedly sophisticated moments, like the contemplative space-blues guitar breakdown of “Torn Apart” or the epic (in the old-school sense) mood shifts of the closing “Call Off the Dogs”. Thorriors rejoice: This one’s a stone-cold killer.
Kings Destroy – A Time of Hunting (2013)
It is fair to say that the star of this album is the vocalist. His ability to have hints of other singers in there, the aforementioned Ozzy is one, as is Keith Caputo in his Life of Agony phase, prior to his, erm, lifestyle change! Murphy sets this album apart, and he is ably supported by his band mates, Carl Porcaro and Chris Skowronski on the guitars (especially good on ‘Decrepit’, Rob Sefcik beating on the drums and the awesomely named Aaron Bumpus on bass!
Chico Seeds – Walk Down (2013)
Chico Seeds from Sydney was born out of Shet, Bucks, Matty and Mach’s love for making upbeat energy filled Rock music that gets the people wound up the way they should be. After all the blood sweat and beers of building a studio in their backyard they got in there and have been writing music for over a year which will feature on their debut album. They are in the midst of recording and mixing they’re Debut album with Peter ‘Reggie’ Bowman (Preshrunk, electric mary, erratic) and from the sounds of it, if you were to put Stone Temple Pilots, Jeff Beck and Metallica into the Microwave on high for 1 Minute

Oblivious – Creating Meaning (2013)
Made In Sweden…
Transubstans veterans OBLIVIOUS is back on track, this time with the stunning 8-tracker “Creating Meaning”! Bluesy, groovy hard rock with flowing bass lines and mysterious riffs that resembles the inventiveness of LED ZEPPELIN and SABBATH, but also acts like DOZER or CLUTCH. Since their 2009 debut “Goons And Masters”, OBLIVIOUS has not lost the harshness of the tone in their sound. During these four years, they’ve rather built up a more solid wall of sound, with well-arranged riffs and conceived 70’s grooves. Explore this record if you wanna know what Transubstans is all about!
