Category: Progressive Rock

Progressive rock, also known as prog rock or prog, is a rock music subgenre that originated in the United Kingdom, with further developments in Germany, Italy, and France, throughout the mid-to-late 1960s and 1970s. It developed from psychedelic rock and originated, similarly to art rock, as an attempt to give greater artistic weight and credibility to rock music.

Niels Veljyt – Sthenic (2011)

Band: Niels Vejlyt
Album: Sthenic
Release: 2011
Label: Lion Music
Genre: Instrumental neoclassical shred

Following in the footsteps of the great neoclassical shred guitarists, Danish axeman Niels Veljyt has taken time away from Infinity Overture, My Empty Room and his own online guitar school to release his sophomore album Sthenic, a marked improvement from début The Predator in both production and composition. It’s relatively short at 40 minutes, but full of proof of his abilities, mixing in various metal styles such as heavy, melodic and progressive.

Enlisting the help of Kris Gildenlöw (ex-Pain Of Salvation) on bass and Jakob Vand (Infinity Overture) on drums, Vejlyt sets out to explore various fretboard techniques such as arpeggios, taps, sweeps and sustained notes, akin to his forefathers Satriani, Vai and Malmsteen, but unfortunately also succumbs to one of their faults: there are very few of the simpler chord progressions and riffs themselves, which means the songs are more divided sections that are repeated, such as in “Rain”. His guitar is like a vocal instrument rather than a stringed instrument, forming complicated and meandering lines that are less memorable than the power-ballad-like sustained notes such as on opener “Heads Up”.

To give the other musicians their credit, Gildenlöw and Vand hold up their ends very well. The bass is audible in several parts, including one multi-layered guitar section in “Die Today” which is particular chaotic. The drums play an interesting role in “My Little Rascal”, opting for a slow groove while Vejlyt flies quickly with tap after sweep, slowing down only when “Kajsa” commences, an interesting ballad intertwining just piano and guitar, and then finishing with the lengthy closer “Winter”, a relaxed acoustic riff and floating bassline that abruptly breaks out into the heaviest song of the lot, in a vibe reminiscent of Symphony X. Certainly an attention-grabbing finisher, but it unfortunately makes the middle tracks slightly forgettable in the build-up.

The world ‘sthenic’ means “possessing a high level of strength and energy”, and that is certainly the case here. For those that enjoyed John Petrucci’s Suspended Animation or the work of Michael Romeo, this comes highly recommended, as well as for any guitar enthusiasts or newcomers to the shred style.

Czar – Vertical Mass Grave (2011)

Vertical Mass Grave’s cover depicts a widely known, in the world of science fiction “geeks” and cinema lovers, object. It’s a Monolith. In Arthur C. Clarke’s complex universe, Monoliths are advanced machines built from extraterrestrial species that appear in the solar system, triggering evolutionary shifts in human history. They are really bad-ass objects – anyone who witnessed the terror of those hominids in Kubrick’s film can tell. Now, to those who already came up with a metaphor about how groundbreaking the band is, let’s make it clear: Czar is a modern metal band that brings nothing new to the table. Should this be a reason to condemn Vertical Mass Grave to oblivion?

Definitely not.

Raised from the ashes of the industrial metallers Acumen Nation, Czar have created an amazingly massive sound which follows the learnings of Meshuggah and their latest immit…(ough), followers. The trio from Chicago isn’t all about the bulkiness though. There’s pretty much going on even when the heavy riffing doesn’t engross all the attention. In “Diapers”, melodic passages balance the storming, whereas coiling leads add brushstrokes of melody in the rather frigid and polyrythmic construction. The dialogue between the industrialized heftiness and the robotic sentimentality echoes through most of the songs. Still, it isn’t melody nor rawness that drives the album, but rhythm.

Hunted – Welcome the Dead (2011)

HUNTED hail from Wales, UK, they’ve started as a cover band but went to develop their own sound, influenced by such bands as IRON MAIDEN, BLIND GUARDIAN, SAXON, DIO, DREAM THEATER, ICED EARTH to name just few of the prominent ones. They also fuse some marks of Progressive into their sound, some thrash and power touches also, which makes for an interesting sound – at once classically Heavy Metal yet enhanced by embracing the other subgenres. They’ve released a demo EP ‘Alone’ before and tested themselves live in many venues. ‘Welcome The Dead’ is their first album, at first self-produced, but now under Massacre Records. The album has a very promising intro, and builds up with a great strength and the sequences of songs are well assembled. Some of the most remarkable tracks were ‘Aria (In Memoriam)’ – grand song opening with beautifully strummed and picked guitars with an acoustic sound that will come in and out during the song, bursting into the powerful melody, epic song with many layers, showing their fusion of the Metal genres truly well, even some Doom metal between its more audible / noticeable Progressive references.

Not to mention it shows of their musicianship in ample measure, the guitars squeeze in a lot of emotion, the vocals are to be commended throughout. ‘The Incident’ which is a sample track atmospherically introduces the next song, ‘Impaled’, the dramatic culminating song with a great narrative with an emotive story of child witnessing murder of his parents. It demonstrates a great use of communicating main and backing vocals as well as instruments for a nearly theatrical piece. The track is underlined by a manic drumming that gets your blood sufficiently boiling. ‘Shadows’ was yet another song that stood out for me, love the heavier, darker guitars, another emotively charged song. The closing of this album is served by a cover of NEVERMORE’s ‘The Heart Collector’ and a truly wonderful one it is! An impressive debut, it sounds already quite accomplished, and I’m sure we’ll hear even more about this band in future as their reputation and body of work will grow. I’ve enjoyed it beyond my anticipation and could only heartily recommend it.

Beyond the Bridge are a German Progressive Rock/Metal band who started in 1999 under the name of “Fallout”. The group seemed to face an early demise when all band members started to settle throughout Germanyto engage in their university studies and professional careers.

It wasn’t until 2005 that guitarist Peter Degenfeld-Schonburg decided to revive the band with a project he had entitled “The Old Man and the Spirit”. For the next five years to come, he would spend innumerable hours together with keyboarder Christopher Tarnow to complete the songs and the story of this slowly evolving concept album. Christopher, who had also been part of the original line-up, got to know the brilliant producer Simon Oberender (a Sascha Paeth collaborator in the productions of Avantasia, Edguy, Epica or Kamelot among others). Simon in his turn brought drummer Fabian Maier and lead vocalist Herbie Langhans in the band. Together with bass player Dominik Stotzem, founder of the old school band and best friend to Peter and Christopher ever since, the line-up of Beyond the Bridge was almost completed. Last but not least, lead vocalist Dilenya Mar came to the band after Peter had been to a concert of hers singing classic Jazz tunes in Munich, Germany.

Besides their experience as rock musicians, all members of Beyond the Bridge are proud to be professionally trained musicians on their respective instruments.
The first studio recordings for “The Old Man and the Spirit” started in 2008 at Gate Studio, Wolfsburg, Germany. Nonetheless, it was a very long way until the completion of the album in 2011, and the band is very proud to finally release this piece of art with Frontiers Records in January 2012.
“The Old Man and the Spirit” deals with the polarity of human sensuousness and superhuman awareness. The latter is embodied by the character of the Spirit. She is the personification of all wisdom and awareness that is unachievable to mankind, however, lacks of the ability to feel.

Her opponent, the character of the Old Man, is presented as a bon vivant who has lived through all highs and lows of human sensation. Steadied by his old age, he searches for a sense, for a coherence, for the meaning of his life in the maelstrom of transiency.
As the story unfolds, the Spirit convinces the Old Man that there is no way for Man to overcome the limits of human perception. They can only be transgressed with the help of the Spirit’s wisdom.
Aware of human curiosity, the Spirit offers to answer all of the Old Man’s questions – in exchange for his experiences and feelings. A high price, as they are inseparably connected to the Old Man’s memories.

Brit Floyd – The Pink Floyd Tribute Show (2011)

The annually promoted Pink Floyd tribute tour will feature ‘The British Pink Floyd Show’ rather than ‘The Australian Pink Floyd Show’ from 2011 after the Australian tribute act parted company with their UK promoter CMP.

Every year The Australian Pink Floyd Show, or TAPFS as they are also known, have toured one of the most large-scale productions you will ever see from a tribute act. Annually thrilling Pink Floyd fans around the world with their lavish live shows, the act are reknown across the globe for their outstanding attempts at recreating the look, feel, and sound of Pink Floyd’s later world tours. We understand The Australian Pink Floyd show will return to UK circuits in 2011 though.

Click Here to Compare & Buy The British Pink Floyd Show Tickets at Stereoboard.com.

In the meantime, The British Pink Floyd Show will be taking over the reigns for their UK promoter CMP Entertainment, stopping off at Floyd’s native United Kingdom for an extensive 31-date tour in April and May as well as a few dates in July and August too. Although the tribute act on show is changing, we are assured that everything else will remain the same.

The promoters have decided to change the name of the group to represent the increasing number of British musicians. Chas Cole, former promoter for TAPFS, had this to say about the change. “In recent years TAPFS tours have featured primarily British musicians and its come to the point where a British show is more appropriate. CMP doesn’t want to stretch the goodwill of Pink Floyd or the fans and therefore, now is a good time to change.”

Rest assured though, that is the only change that is happening. Everything else about the new ‘BritFloyd’ tour will stay the same, including the outstanding sound quality, staggering light shows and animations.

The British Pink Floyd Show will play the following UK dates:
1. Show Intro
02. Shine On You Crazy Diamond
03. Learning To Fly
04. High Hopes
05. Welcome To The Machine
