Progressive rock, also known as prog rock or prog, is a rock music subgenre that originated in the United Kingdom, with further developments in Germany, Italy, and France, throughout the mid-to-late 1960s and 1970s. It developed from psychedelic rock and originated, similarly to art rock, as an attempt to give greater artistic weight and credibility to rock music.
Crystal Breed – The Place Unknown (2011)
Crystal Breed, catchy refrains, intelligent arrangements, powerful choruses, viruoso soli, driving beats, bombastic sounds and hard guitar-riffs The band “Crystal Breed” from Hannover was founded in 2008 by singer-guitarist Niklas Turmann and singer-keyboarder Covin Bahn.
When the two musicians had been on several tours with ex-Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth and bands like “Gamma Ray”,
Andromeda – Manifest Tyranny (2011)
Sweden’s Andromeda with severals albums and tours under their belt is definitely one of the most successful progressive metal bands in Scandinavia and Europe. Albums like “Extension of the Wish”, “II=I” and “Chimera” are considered classics in the scene, and the DVD “Playing off the Board” shows how talented this Swedish guys really are. This is something Andromeda also have proved over the years with appearances at festivals like ProgPower USA and Europe, Bloodstock UK and shows together with Evergrey among others.
DGM – Momentum (2013)
Momentum shouldn’t be ignored by anyone remotely interested in melodic prog, progressive power metal, and more than likely, power metal in general. This is a milestone for a band that seems to have been improving itself repeatedly with its last few releases, and I now consider them a burgeoning first-line band (in terms of pure talent, if not commercial success) along with the likes of Pagan’s Mind, Seventh Wonder, and Vision Divine. Though perhaps not as instantly gripping as some, Momentum builds itself up with each concurrent listen, and is a force to be reckoned with.
