TYKETTO – Faithless (2012)

ONLY OUR SITE!CRAZY RELEASE!

“Faithless” will appear on Tyketto’s first new album in 18 years, ‘Dig In Deep’, due for release on April 20th in Europe and April 24th in North America. ‘Dig In Deep’ features the original Tyketto line-up of Danny Vaughn (lead vocals), Brooke St. James (lead guitar/backing vocals), Jimi Kennedy (bass/backing vocals) and Michael Clayton (drums/backing vocals). With recent appearances at Sweden Rock, Download, Firefest, Hard Rock Hell and Hard in Rio, the band realized they still had a huge fan base worldwide and the timing was perfect for a new album.

Formed in New Jersey in 1990, Tyketto released their major label debut ‘Don’t Come Easy’ in 1991. The album contained the hit AOR songs “Forever Young” and “Seasons” as well as “Wings” and “End Of The Summer Days”, whose respective videos, along with “Forever Young”, were in heavy rotation on MTV. Tyketto has sold hundreds of thousands of albums worldwide.

In a November interview with SleazeRoxx.com Danny Vaughn stated, “It’s a double edged sword, the ‘Don’t Come Easy’ thing, because there will always be some people who, if you try to remake that exact feel, exact vibe and write songs just like those songs, will say ‘they’re just trying to do what they did and make it sell, they’ve got nothing new and it’s the same stuff regurgitated’. If you go out and do something totally different then some people will complain that ‘it’s nothing like ‘Don’t Come Easy’, what do these guys think they are doing?’ So I guarantee there is going to be somebody unhappy.”

“The thing with us is I think we walk both lines, because obviously it’s many years later, so our musicianship is different and the music we’ve been exposed to has changed”, continued the singer. “But we are not going to try and make Tyketto sound like … I can’t think who … but I think it will sound like us. It will have some more maturity to it. I think there are going to be some differences, but I’m not going to change the way I sing. My harmony structures will be similar and my belief in what makes a big chorus is still there. What I do know is that this album is going to be pretty damn aggressive — not in a thrash metal sense. Some of the songs are making me think of Def Leppard. There is a ballad, but I don’t know if there will be more than one. I think it’s going to be a very fast-paced and aggressive record. Now we are starting to throw in the elements that will make it more like what people know of Tyketto — the acoustic guitar will blend in at certain points. I think it will be exactly what it is, people will hear it and go ‘yes, that is Tyketto’ and ‘yes, that is not old Tyketto, that is Tyketto 2011’.”

Glenn Hughes – Live In Wolverhampton [Double CD]2012

ONLY OUR SITE!

Having made the 200 mile round trip in thick fog to see Glenn Hughes play the Robin 2 a couple of years ago, I was all the more intrigued to see whether what I witnessed translated well to DVD and CD. Drew Thompson, who produced the recording, has a good heritage having also released the rather excellent ‘Phoenix Rising’ Purple Mark IV chronicle.

You get two CDs and two DVDs which is a generous collection to behold. For the uninitiated, Wolverhampton is the nearest big city to where Glenn Hughes grew up and joined Mel Galley and Dave Holland for the funk rockers, Trapeze. Mel Galley’s untimely death prompted this revisiting of mainly Trapeze tracks with the occasional foray into Purple territory with a 20 minute version of ‘Mistreated’ plus some funky selections from the solo catalogue. But let’s concentrate on the Trapeze material.

Most of the tracks have stood the test of time. ‘Medusa’ was re-recorded for the Black Country Communion album. In a similar vein, ‘Jury’ contradicts my convenient label of “funk rockers” and reminds us that Trapeze also belted out some pretty decent riffing in the Sabbath tradition. The ballad, ‘Coast to Coast’ showed the diversity that was offered up prior to Hughes’s departure to take up the Purple berth in 1973.

There has little attempt to doctor this performance with synthetics. What you see and hear is what was heard on the two evenings. Occasionally the naivety in the lyrics reflect that this was a band which was developing and not the finished article. And yet this modern treatment breathed new life into songs that had largely gathered dust in vinyl collections from Texas to Timbuctoo.

‘Seafull’ is a tour de force and my favourite off the album with its tones and moods that allow the band of Steve Stevens, Jeff Kollman and Anders Olinder space to breath each side of the Hughes delivery on bass and vocals.

Keyboard man, Anders Olinder is instrumental in this respect and certainly not a Jon Lord tribute artist. ‘Black Cloud’ should have been the hit single that might well have changed history – an easy going rocker in the tradition of the Doobies and well melded by this band tonight.

An emotional moment was the introduction of Mel’s Gibbo, “Black Beauty,” played with aplomb by Glenn Hughes himself.

The DVD also features some interesting extras such as interviews withTrapeze’s old manager, Tony Perry and the master raconteur, Glenn himself. I have said it before that Glenn Hughes has a big story to tell mainly because he survived to tell it, through music, video and now of course autobiography. It’s been a fascinating life and this live album offers a worthy testament both to Hughes and his former bandmates.

Brian Hunsaker – Across the Galaxy 2012

The style of the late 80s – when instrumental guitar rock was at the peak of its popularity – to this day curiously dictates its methods to legions high-tech guitar aspirants all over the world. Seattle born and raised Brian Hunsaker is one such hopeful who on his freshly released CD channels the vibes of the time when the shred gurus of today were still at their tadpole stages.

By: Nick Boeka
In an age where technology allows musicians to rely heavily on post-production, vocal shifting and “studio-magic,” it’s a great relief to pop in Gaslight Street’s freshman release, Blue Skies for Fools, and hear the honest sounds of rich guitar, scratchy vocals and notable improvisation. These nuances lay the foundation for a bright future, and are spread throughout the record, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of this group from Charleston, SC. Fans of early Black Crowes will find much to connect with in this young band with such potential.

With heavy emphasis on vintage keys sound, Jason Stokes uses organ and Wurlitzer to provide the melodic backbone for Brooks DuBose and Frank Nelson to compliment with drums and fat-bottomed bass, respectively. Rounding out the group’s sound is singer-guitarist Campbell Brown, whose unique vocals and emotional stories, like first track “Skin Deep,” offer something missing in much of today’s music.

From start to finish there is a progression of intensity, culminating with “Black & Blue Salvia,” which has a really great hook throughout the song that double times in the verses. One can imagine this song opening up to a nice long exploratory jam in concert. The final and title track brings it back home with a nod to the classic Southern rock sound, featuring an acoustic setup and catchy chord changes. All they need is to attack the road hard, spread their music to the masses and there’s no way that Gaslight Street could ever run out fuel.
