Ouijabeard is the side project of Dr. Living Dead vocalist Dr. Ape, and Die and Let Live is quite the departure from the thrash metal of his main gig. This basically early Eighties style melodic heavy metal inspired by, according to Ape, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Kiss’s The Elder, though I’m not sure that last one is worth admitting to. Ape also treats some of the history and myths associated with the infamous Russian mystic Grigorij Rasputin.

German power metallers GAMMA RAY will release “Skeletons & Majesties Live” on double CD, Blu-ray and DVD on November 30. The set will feature footage of the band’s April 29, 2011 performance at the legendary Z7 in Pratteln, Switzerland.

“Skeletons & Majesties Live” has a playing time of two hours and is a tour de force through the band’s history so far, including lots of hits and classics, but also tracks which were undeservedly under-represented to date.

Alloy is a new Swedish combatant on the battle grounds of classic heavy metal. To quote themselves they are on a path frequently trodden. Alloy plays classic sounding eighties heavy metal, showing quite obvious traces of Iron Maiden and Manowar, but also US metal band Brocas Helm. They place themselves alongside newcomers like Enforcer, Steelwings, Helvetets Port and Evilseve, and they do pretty well. There are some flaws here and there, but nothing major. I have to say that I really like this band a lot. Their debut release was a damn fine piece of 80’s, early 90’s, influenced melodic hard rock stuff with catchy choruses, some impressive tracks, inspired riffs and solos and great vocal performances from the band’s shouter Marc Farrano.
