The Battle – Lost Ancient Land 2012

The-Battle-Lost-Ancient-Landnow/like a Iron Maiden Nightwish Ozzy/brazil

Lost Ancient Land is a vigorous album, which still aims at placing musicality in the first place, with an emphasis on the melodies, textures, counterpoints and superposition of the instruments. It brings the influences of the classic heavy metal with progressive touches, use of keyboards and orchestra. Introductions, moods, rhythm and tone changes are present in almost all tracks – what does not undervalue the commercial aspect, present on the melodic choruses.

Richie Scarlet – I Plead the Fifth 2012

now/master/bomb

Richie Scarlet, known as the “Emperor of Rock and Roll,” is really the working man of rock. He lives and breathes his craft, never to be mistaken as ‘weekend warrior.’ While never having mainstream success, his musical credibility is highly respected amongst his musical peers, having played in bands with legends like Ace Frehley

Neo Star Nova-Z – Into the Darkness 2013

Neo-Star Nova Z is the colorful moniker of multi-instrumentalist Brian Waymire, and he’s just released his latest CD entitled Omega Factor. Basically this is a five song EP, but Brian has added instrumental versions of some songs, plus a number of remixes and demos from an earlier release (Infinity Factor).

Waymire is a decent guitarist, laying down solid rhythm lines and catchy hooks. His soloing is very good, although at times he tries to do a bit too much and ends up overreaching just a little. He is a very good bassist with an effective sense of timing and mood, and his drum work supports both guitar and bass well. The same can be said for his keyboard work – generally quite effective without dominating.

Rough Cut – Rollin’ Thunder (2013)

Front

Rough Cut are a brand new band from South West England (not to be confused with a similarly named hair-metal outfit from the mid-’80s) that has already toured with Crashdiet and have a logo/album cover that screams Reckless Love — but they’re also a band that lacks the professionalism and dynamic appeal that will take them as far as those aforementioned rock groups.

Lost Earth – Never Be Heard 2012

now

Lost Earth is an Auckland, New Zealand based project carried out by multi-instrumentalist André Birt (taking on vocal, guitar, bass and keyboard duties) and drummer Brent Martin. The pair have released their debut and self-titled album independently and citing the lack of a live scene for new bands in their homeland the band is a studio-only affair. Having said that; it does have a big sound with a bright production and the drums are very upfront in the mix. Although the band classifies its sound as melodic rock, I would say that it is sounds like very accessible prog rock with a bit of classic rock thrown in. The vocals, although pleasant to listen to, are half-spoken on the whole and prevent some of the songs reaching th
