WIDESPREAD PANIC’s legendary Halloween 2000 Austin City Limits performance finally gets a proper 2026 reissue, catching the classic Michael Houser-era lineup at full boil. Loose, greasy and fearless, this is Southern jam rock stretched until the seams start smoking.
Recorded on October 31, 2000, the set captures one of the band’s most cherished lineups: John Bell, Dave Schools, John “JoJo” Hermann, Todd Nance, Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz and founding guitarist Michael Houser.
“Let’s Get Down To Business” opens with a laid-back groove before “Ain’t Life Grand” and “Space Wrangler” begin turning the room into something much bigger. Houser’s guitar work is the heart of the recording — fluid, patient and never in a hurry to prove a point.
“Climb To Safety” brings the melodic side forward, while “Blue Indian” and “Casa Del Grillo” keep things earthy and loose. Then comes the centerpiece: “Driving Song, Pt. 1 > Surprise Valley > Driving Song, Pt. 2”, a sprawling sequence where the band stops sounding like six musicians and starts moving like one large animal.
“Travelin’ Light” brings some J.J. Cale dust into the room before the encore run of “Bear’s Gone Fishin’”, “Dyin’ Man” and “Porch Song” closes the night with the audience fully locked into the band’s wavelength.
What makes this performance special is how little it feels controlled. The arrangements breathe, tempos stretch, guitars wander off the road and somehow always find their way home. That unpredictability is exactly where WIDESPREAD PANIC were strongest.
The 2026 edition also carries extra historical weight. Michael Houser passed away in 2002, making recordings like this a precious snapshot of the original band at the peak of its chemistry.
